Study Guide – Aug. 30 – Sept. 3

One basic human need is to feel safe. For those that are grown and mature we can create our own since of security. But for those that are young and vulnerable they must rely on others to keep them safe. This week we will reflect on what it means to be safe in the arms of Christ and how the church provides a place where we all can feel safe (physically, emotionally, and spiritually).

Monday, Aug. 30 – Fear is a natural state of mind in this life. We are naturally insecure because we feel that we are never good enough, smart enough, or strong enough to measure up to others. Our faith in Jesus Christ tells us a different story. By God’s grace in Jesus Christ we are accepted, forgiven, loved and free. God goes to great lengths to express this grace to us. Read Zephaniah 3:17. How does this passage make you feel? What is your reaction to “fear is a natural state of mind”?

Tuesday, Aug. 31 – We often think safety is found in predictability, control, and freedom to be you. These safety misnomers create anxiety and fear in us because we are always inwardly and outwardly fighting to keep them up. Read Ruth 2:4-22. Ruth and Naomi where in a place where they knew nothing of predictability, control, or a freedom to express themselves, they where literally at the mercy of others. What did Boaz do to help them feel safe?

Wed., Sept. 1 – The church is a place where we should feel safe and be dedicated to making others feel safe as well. Jesus describes a remarkable atmosphere that is created when He is “in charge.” Read John 10:1-15. How is Jesus described here? What comfort do you take in knowing He is a shepherd? How can we be shepherds to others? What difference would it make in our congregation if we took this passage seriously?

Thurs., Sept. 2 – Read Psalm 121. Where do you look for help when you are in trouble? How does “keeping your chin up” help you get through? What does it mean for the Lord to “protect” you? What happens when you get hurt?

Friday, Sept. 3 – Read Isaiah 35:1-10. What do you learn in this word picture? Which image is most powerful for you? How will you help create this reality in the church?
