Celebrating 170 Years of History

1835-1837 - The Methodist Church was organized in Pleasant Hill at the home of Rev. William Ferril. As the churhc grew the worship location moved from the homes of members to the McAnninch School in Old Town.
 

  The Methodist Episcopal Church South

1845 - Due to controversy over state's rights and slavery the Methodist Episcopla Church South (MECS) separeted and built a church at the corner of Wright and Independence.

1868 - The MECS built a brick church at the NW corner of Myrtle and Armstrong. This building was destroyed by tornado.

1878 - MECS rebuilt at the NE corner of Olive and Armstrong and dedicated the church in 1889. See photo at right.

Methodist Episcopal Church - 1888

  The Methodist Episcopal Church

1836 - The Methodist Episcopal Church MEC was first organized. They reorganized in 1856 and had their first worship in a schoolhouse.

1868 - The MEC built at the corner of Oak and Armstrong. The "Old Bell" was first installed and rang to call worshippers to services.

1888 - MEC tore down that structure at Oak and Armstrong and rebuilt at the same location. See photo at left.

   

   Churches Reunite

1916 - MEC and MECS reunite. Servies were held at the MEC at Oak and Armstrong. In 1917 fire destroyed this church structure.

1918 - The MECS building was sold. The congregation worshipped in a movie theatre for a month then purchased the Kellogg Theatre (Opera House) on Cedar Street. The "Old Bell" moved with them. See the photo below on the right.

  United and Growing

1939 - The Methodist Episcopal and Methodist Protestant churches united to from "The Methodist Church".

1950 - Fire at the Cedar Street church caused between $15,000 - $25,000 damage. The church moved to the high school for services until repairs could be made.

1967 - The congregation moved to their new church building at Lexington and Rice. The "Old Bell" moved again and kept ties with the past. See the photo below.

1968 - The Methodist Church and Evangelical United Bretheren Church united to form "The United Methodist Church".

1974 - The congregation moved into the new sanctuary. The Cross and Flame, a symbol of God's Spirit, was added in 1975. See the photo below.

2003 - A new addition was added to the church facility at Lexington adn Rice including a Community Life Center (CLC) which is used for worship, fellowship and community functions. The CLC also included a new fully equipped kitchen, a hospitality room, class rooms, storage closets and rest rooms with showers.
